Why Does My Bra Hurt? How Living With Fibromyalgia Led Me to Make the Softest Wire-Free Bras in the UK

If you have ever asked yourself, "why does my bra hurt?" - you are not alone. For years, I struggled to find a bra that did not leave me in more pain than before I put it on. Underwires digging in. Scratchy labels. Tight bands. Seams in all the wrong places. For most people, a bra is just a bra. For those of us living with fibromyalgia, chronic pain, or sensory sensitivities, the wrong bra can make an already difficult day so much harder.

So I made my own.

My Story

I'm Debz, and I have fibromyalgia and spinal issues. If you are not familiar with it, fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes widespread pain, fatigue, and heightened sensitivity - including to touch, texture, and pressure. On a bad day, even the softest fabric can feel unbearable. Finding a bra that I could actually wear comfortably felt impossible.

I searched everywhere. I tried every "comfortable" bra I could find. Nothing came close to what I needed. So I taught myself to sew, developed my own patterns, and started making bras from scratch - soft, wire-free, non-wired bras made from organic cotton jersey with no scratchy labels, no harsh elastic, and no underwire. Bras that I could actually wear.

What started as a personal solution became Designed By Debz.

What Makes a Bra Sensory-Friendly?

If you live with fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, autism, ADHD, EDS, or any condition that affects how your body processes sensation, you will know that the details matter enormously. Here is what I built into every bra:

  • No underwire: wire-free and non-wired throughout, so there is nothing rigid pressing into your ribs or sides
  • Soft organic cotton jersey: 95% GOTS-certified organic cotton, breathable and gentle against sensitive skin
  • No scratchy labels or itchy seams: sensory-friendly construction throughout
  • Soft fabric waistband: No harsh elastic cutting in
  • Gentle four-way stretch moves with your body rather than fighting it
  • Made to your measurements: because how a bra fits matters as much as what it is made from

Finding a Bra That Actually Fits

One of the biggest causes of bra discomfort - for anyone, but especially for those with chronic pain - is wearing the wrong size. Most people are wearing a bra that does not fit properly, and an ill-fitting bra puts pressure in all the wrong places.

Our bras are made to our own unique patterns and do not follow standard high street sizing. We strongly recommend measuring yourself before ordering. Use our Bra Size Calculator to find your perfect fit - we size from a 24" back to a 60" back, and from A/B cup all the way to N/O cup.

Not confident measuring yourself? Book a Personal Bra Fitting with me for a one-to-one Zoom fitting and a free remake guarantee if our recommended size does not fit.

You Deserve a Bra That Does Not Hurt

If you have been putting up with bra pain because you thought that was just how bras feel - it does not have to be. There are options. Soft cup, wire-free, non-wired bras made with your comfort as the priority, in sizes that actually include you.

Browse the full Bra Collection - inclusive sizing from A to O cup, handmade to order in the UK.
