When choosing swimwear for yourself or your children, most people focus on style, prints, or their favourite characters. But one of the most important factors is something many overlook - colour.
The colour of a swimsuit can make a real difference in how visible someone is in the water, and in some situations, that visibility can be life-saving.
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in young children. It often happens quickly and quietly - not with splashing or shouting, but with subtle movements that can easily go unnoticed. From a distance, a child struggling in the water may not look like a person at all, especially if their swimwear blends into the surroundings.
Some colours can almost disappear underwater or be mistaken for shadows, reflections, or debris. This is especially true in natural bodies of water like lakes, where visibility is already reduced.
Safety testing has shown that bright, high-visibility colours make a significant difference. Neon shades such as orange, yellow, and green are much easier to spot both on the surface and below it. These colours stand out against the water and are far less likely to blend into the background.
On the other hand, colours like blue, green, white, and pale tones tend to fade into the water. In pools, they can blend with the pool lining. In lakes, they can resemble reflections or natural elements, such as leaves or the sky. Dark colours can also be difficult to identify, especially from a distance.
While choosing a bright swimsuit can improve visibility, it should never replace proper supervision.
Water safety always comes first:
- Never leave a child unattended near or in water, even for a moment
- Stay close and actively watch, without distractions
- Consider having a designated adult whose sole focus is supervision
- Help children build water confidence through swimming lessons
