Comfy autumn outfits should feel good when you sit, stretch or curl up for a rest. Soft sleeves, gentle waistbands and enough room for another layer make a difference. A hoodie can feel lovely on its own, then become tight through the arms beneath a coat.
Comfort has personal roots at Designed By Debz. Debz began sewing to make softer clothes her children could wear comfortably, after struggling with scratchy seams, labels and tight waistbands.
Our autumn & Halloween clothing collection brings together playful prints and seasonal layers. Here are five outfit ideas, with attention to fabric feel, fit and the details that can make getting dressed more comfortable.
What makes an Autumn outfit comfortable?
Start with the fabric touching your skin. Look for a texture you enjoy wearing, whether that is smooth jersey or a softly brushed finish. Consider breathability as well as warmth, particularly when several layers sit close together.
Seams, labels and trims deserve the same attention. Feel inside the neckline, under the arms and around the waistband. Look for smooth finishes and check whether care labels are absent or removable. Those details vary between garments. Our sensory-friendly clothing guide explores fabric and construction in more depth.
Let your own sensory preferences guide the fit. You may prefer a base layer that sits close to your body, or more space between you and the fabric.
When trying something on, notice where it touches you. Pay attention to the cuffs, underarm seams and waistband, as well as how the fabric feels across larger areas of skin.
Five comfy autumn outfit ideas
1. A printed hoodie with comfortable joggers

Pair a pumpkin-print hoodie with plain joggers and soft socks, or combine a black sweatshirt with patterned trousers. Add trainers and a roomy coat for heading out.
Our printed hoodies include overhead and zip-up shapes. The Creepy Pumpkins zip hoodie has brushed fleece inside, relaxed shoulders and a tear-away care label. Its cotton-feel fabric is made from recycled polyester and elastane.
For a looser leg, the Ouija Bats design in our printed joggers collection has stretchy jersey fabric, an elasticated waist and an adjustable drawstring.
Adjust the drawstring so the joggers stay in place without feeling tight. Keep the T-shirt underneath lightweight, with a hem that sits comfortably over the waistband. These casual autumn outfits leave you with an easy combination to wear when the hoodie comes off.
2. A soft T-shirt with an easy removable layer
Try a colourful T-shirt, relaxed trousers and an open zip hoodie. A lilac or teal top beneath a darker layer brings colour around the neckline.
Start with a T-shirt or vest from our printed tops collection. Fabrics and cuts vary, so choose the base layer for its feel against your skin, paying attention to the collar and underarm seams.
Keep it light enough to sit smoothly beneath the hoodie. Leave the hem untucked when that feels more comfortable around your middle.
A front-opening layer is worth considering when pulling clothes over your head is uncomfortable. Look at where the zip and its pull sit when fastened. A soft T-shirt underneath can provide some separation between the fastening and your skin.
3. A printed dress, soft tights and a hoodie
A printed dress with tights and an open hoodie makes a cosy autumn combination. Try a dark floral dress with plain tights, or a simpler dress with patterned legs.
Our dresses and skirts collection includes T-shirt and skater shapes. Choose a waist position that feels comfortable, and allow enough room beneath the hoodie for the dress sleeves.
The Wilde Mode x Better Tights designs in our socks and tights collection have a silky finish and flat seams. Their size chart uses height alongside clothing size, so check both.
For extra warmth, add socks and comfortable boots. Try the layers together inside your footwear, especially around the toes. Leave enough space for the tights and socks without squeezing your feet.
4. Gentle base layers under a T-shirt and skirt
Wear a soft-cup bra and comfortable briefs beneath a loose T-shirt, stretchy skirt and cardigan. Pay attention to where the bra band, underwear and skirt waistband sit, particularly when bending or sitting down.
Our wire-free bra collection includes the Black Comfort Bra, made from 95% organic cotton jersey and 5% elastane. This style is label-free, with no underwire or fastening at the back.
Its internal silicone band can also be left out on request. That gives you another detail to discuss before ordering when the feel of a band matters to you.
Choose underwear with gentle leg openings and enough room through the hips. Then try the outer layers over it, noticing any overlapping seams or elastic pressing into the same area.
5. Warm layers after an autumn swim
Pack a dry T-shirt, loose joggers, a hoodie and warm socks, with a roomy changing robe for getting dressed beside the water. Keep the towel and clothes together and within easy reach.
Our swimming accessories collection includes towels to pack alongside those layers. Choose clothes with openings that are easy to manage, and have suitable footwear ready for afterwards.
The Floppy Flowers design in our dry changing robes collection has a waterproof outer, a full-length zip and a choice of sherpa or dimple fleece lining. Consider the texture inside the robe as carefully as the print outside.
Check its measurements allow room to move your arms inside while changing. Keep the robe on dry land, and change out of wet swimwear before dressing in dry layers.
For cold-water swimming, follow the RNLI’s safety advice. Take plenty of warm clothing and a warm drink, and warm up carefully after your swim.
How to layer clothes without feeling restricted
Begin with the softest, most comfortable layer against your skin. Add a lighter warm layer, then an outer layer with enough room over both. Several manageable layers give you more ways to adjust your temperature than one heavy garment.
Pay attention to the sleeves. A loose T-shirt sleeve needs space inside a hoodie, and the hoodie needs space inside a coat. Try bending your elbows and reaching forwards. Adjust any fabric caught beneath your arms or gathered at the cuffs.
Around the middle, give waistbands some space. Try an untucked top, a different waistband height or a looser outer layer when several edges press in the same place.
Leave yourself a straightforward way to cool down indoors. An open hoodie, removable coat or lighter base layer lets you adjust how much you are wearing.
Finally, sit in the complete outfit for a few minutes. Include the bra, socks and coat you plan to wear. Check that you can breathe comfortably and move without fabric pulling across your back, hips or shoulders.
Plus size autumn outfits that prioritise fit
Start with enough room through the bust, upper arms, waist, hips and thighs. Choose the shape you enjoy wearing, allowing space for the layers beneath it.
Stretch can give a garment flexibility, but consider its cut and waistband too. A wide-leg jogger offers a different feel from a fitted legging. A dress with a higher waist seam will sit differently from a loose T-shirt dress.
Allow for body fluctuations when choosing how closely a garment fits. Adjustable details can be useful, provided the elastic itself feels comfortable.
Use your current measurements and the chart for the individual garment. Our inclusive size guide explains the different sizing systems and points you towards help with fit. Size ranges vary by style, so check the specific piece before ordering.
For help choosing between sizes, send us your measurements and the name of the garment. Mention any areas where you would prefer more room.
Choosing autumn prints that still feel like you
Autumn colours can include teal, purple, hot pink and bright green alongside rust, brown and black. Try picking out one colour from a print and repeating it in your socks or base layer.
Our seasonal designs include pumpkins, bats, skeletons and darker gothic artwork. A printed hoodie over plain trousers gives one pattern plenty of space. Or carry the same print through your hoodie and trousers for a bolder combination.
For something quieter, pair a dark floral dress with a plain layer, or let patterned tights show beneath a longer skirt. Choose the amount of colour and detail that feels good to wear.
Build your comfortable autumn wardrobe
Start with the pieces you already enjoy wearing, then look for any gaps:
- A soft, breathable T-shirt or vest.
- A comfortable bra or bralette and gentle-fitting underwear.
- A hoodie with room for a layer underneath.
- Stretchy joggers with a comfortable waistband.
- A dress or skirt that feels good sitting down.
- Socks or tights with comfortable seams.
- A towel, dry layers and a changing robe for outdoor swims.
